Shrimper MkI Omega
I have owned Omega, a Mk1 Outboard Shrimper, since 2013. Moored on the River Frome at Wareham, she has been lightly used for day sails in Poole Harbour and the bay, and occasionally to the Isle of Wight and Weymouth Bay.
Very well equipped and maintained, I have kept on top of all the small jobs inevitable with owning a boat and have improved her every year.
The outboard is a Tohatsu 6HP 4Stroke 2013 serviced as the manufacturer recommends every season. It has run 250 to 300 hours since new. It has the ‘Saildrive’ option. That is the propeller pitch is matched to the Shrimper, which aids economy, lowers noise and benefits manoeuvring. It also has a battery charging output to keep the 12V system topped up. A flexible solar panel on the coach roof charges the battery.
Omega, having a black hull with cream topsides, is always buffed and waxed during winter refits, but like any black boat is likely to lose its shine over the season. It does however retain a not unpleasing ‘vintage’ matt black colour.
I have completed this year’s refit to a high standard and Omega is ready for the water. The problematic steel pellet and slate dust ballast has been removed and replaced with lead and polyester resin. Mast and bowsprit have been refinished with Sikkens and the boom and gaff touched up with Epifanes varnish. The whole craft has been washed and cleaned thoroughly. The hull was ‘Copper coated’ in 2013 but as that is 10 years since, I have helped it with a couple of coats of Flag copper based antifouling. The nearly freshwater Frome doesn’t foul much, just slime really.
Omega is presently on my drive in Wareham, on the Bramber piggyback trailer, and may be easily viewed by arrangement.
